The starting point of this project was a successful previous EU project about studies of symbiotic preparations combining Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains with galacto-oligosaccharides to abate the pathogenic bacterium Clostridium difficile. Probiotics are well established on the food market, but their direct health effect is questioned today since few of the bacteria will survive the passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore addition of prebiotics is important. It is the combination of prebiotics (different oligosaccharides) and probiotics that is called synbiotics and hopefully will have superior health effects in both humans and animals. Our business concept is to design symbiotic preparations with optimized composition of the mix of pro- and prebiotics for food and feed industry, especially for companies lacking own expertise and facilities for such developments. There are ample opportunities to patent products in this area.
